Today I tore my left sock on a nail head that was sticking out from a piece of corner-round molding on the floor. I went to the department store to replace it, but they only sold them in pairs. I figured out how to separate them and took one sock to the cashier.
I put the sock on the conveyor, watched it convey to the cashier, and as she picked it up to inspect it I just stood there smiling at her. After 30 seconds or so, she handed me the sock with a disgusted look on her face and told me to just go. When I got home I realized that I took the wrong one. I needed a left sock. So I went back to the store to exchange it but I had no receipt.
As I stood in line with the single sock, I saw exactly what I needed: A package of THREE socks! Yay! (Have a close look at the picture above. It is not Photoshopped.)
I grabbed them and headed over to the same cashier from earlier. When she saw me coming she quickly flipped a switch to turn off the “Lane Open” light and yelled to her manager that she was going on break. I went to the next checkout lane, where the male cashier gave me a knowing look as he took my money and bagged up my socks.
Here’s a good take-away from this post: Always wash socks inside out. This allows foot stuff to escape.
